The atelier

One room on Carrer de Petritxol, four benches, a kiln, and a way of working that has not changed much since 2017.

The Orla atelier on Carrer de Petritxol: a long, narrow room with four oak goldsmith's benches, a small kiln and a goldsmith at work by the glass street door
Carrer de Petritxol 9 · 08002 Barcelona
  1. Beginnings

Núria Orla trained as a goldsmith in Barcelona and Florence before spending six years at the bench of a traditional workshop in the Gothic Quarter. In 2017 she rented a narrow ground floor on Carrer de Petritxol, two doors from the chocolate shops, and began making pieces under her own name.

  2. A small team

The atelier has grown to four: Núria, two goldsmiths and a setter. Everyone trained at the bench and everyone still works at one. There is no production line, and no piece is signed off until Núria has turned it in her hand.

  3. Made to order

We do not hold stock. Each piece is cast, finished and set after you order it, which takes between 10 and 15 working days. It means less waste, exact sizing, and a piece that was made because you asked for it.

How a piece is made

A ring shank held in a clamp at the bench, with files and a loupe beside it
  1. Design and wax

Each shape begins as a drawing and is carved or printed in wax, then checked for proportion on the hand.

  2. Casting

The wax is cast in 18k recycled gold refined in Europe, then cleaned of its sprues and left to rest.

  3. Finishing

Surfaces are filed, sanded and polished by hand, or textured with a hammer and left matte.

  4. Setting and hallmarking

Stones are set under the microscope, the piece is hallmarked and cleaned, and it is packed for shipping.
